The LCIA Research Equipment Competition is intended to enhance existing or proposed research activities, external funding prospects, and advance our research programs by supporting the purchase of necessary equipment. Priority was given to applications that constituted a shared resource.
Principal investigators William Cole, Michael Walsh, Justin MacDonald, Andrew Braun, Wayne Chen and Xi-Long Zheng were very happy to learn that their application for equipment funds was successful. These scientists, who work to understand how our blood vessels function in health and disease, needed a new ultracentrifuge to replace an old, broken device. The centrifuge is used to separate different components of cells, such as the membranes from the nucleus and cytoplasm, or globular proteins from filamentous proteins within cells so that they can be quantified or studied separately in a test tube.
