Bench replication key to biomedical engineering discovery

The Calgary Herald and CTV Calgary on-line have reported on research being conducted by the Libin Institute’s Dr. Kristina Rinker, a biomedical engineer in the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Engineering.

Dr. Rinker’s research, recently published in the American Journal of Physiology – Heart and Circulatory Physiology confirmed the response of endothelial cells to the presence of SMAD2 protien. This response of the cells to the protein had to date only been speculation. The key to the discovery was a bench replication of blood flow in cardiac muscle.
