2008 AHFMR Independant Investigator Award Competitions

Members of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta (LCIA) achieved exceptional success in the recent Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research Independant Investigator Award Competitions. Overall success rate for applicants province wide was 31% where as LCIA applicants achieved 88.5% success – remarkably almost three fold the provincial average!


Clinical Investigator:
Sofia B. Ahmed – Evaluation of the Renin Angiotensin System in Aboriginal People
Brenda Gerull (recruit – appointment starting July 09) – Molecular Characterization of Disease Mechanisms Involved in Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC)

Senior Scholar:
Justin A. MacDonald – Regulation of Myosin Phosphatase Activity and Smooth Muscle Contraction in Health and Disease

Senior Investigator:
Rodger D. Loutzenhiser – Vasomotor Mechanisms in the Renal Microcirculation
Hendrik E. ter Keurs – Cardiac Muscle Function in Normal and Diseased Heart

Population Health Investigator:
Doreen M. Rabi – Sex Differences In Cardiovascular Outcomes in Diabetes: Exploring the Mediating Effects of Cardioprotective Medication Use, Adherence and Efficacy in Women and Men

Health Senior Scholar Competition:
Ronald J. Sigal – Exercise Interventions in Individuals With or At Risk of Diabetes
