McNuggets not all created equal

In Researchers on April 19, 2012 at 10:43 pm

An article published in the April 16, 2012 edition of the Canadian Medical Association Journal compared the salt content of fast food products available in different countries.  Fast food outlets such as Burger King and Pizza Hut compared like products that were sold in different countries by the same company.  The results were quite surprising, though as it turns out, some weren’t surprised at all.

Interesting nuggets from the study:

  • A salad purchased in Canada from one of the outlets included in the study, on average, had 2.5 times the salt as the same salad purchased in New Zealand or France!
  • A McDonald’s McNugget in Canada contains 2.5 times the salt of a McNugget from the U.K.!

The Libin Institute‘s Dr. Norm Campbell, co-investigator and spokesperson for the authors who also serves as the HSF/CIHR Chair in Hypertension Prevention and Control, shared results and his thoughts with media from across North America.  Below is just a sample:

CTV National News, Global TV, University of Calgary, TIME, Calgary Herald, National Post, Toronto Star, CBC National News

Walking the walk – help yourself while supporting great causes!

In Libin Fun on April 6, 2012 at 6:16 am

The vision of the Libin Institute highlights cardiovascular wellness, health care, research and education.  While we oft speak directly to health care, research and education, the area of wellness many times does not get the attention it deserves.  Wellness, which encompasses actualizing health promotion disease prevention, is a critical success factor at the population level, and that is why the Institute is encouraging all, starting with our own Members, Staff and Trainees, and their families, to ‘walk the walk‘.

Here are a few walks/runs that the Institute is either directly involved with or is supporting.  ALL are encouraged to participate!

Mother’s Day Run & Walk (5K, 10K) – Sunday May 13 at Chinook Centre

Calgary Marathon (5K, 10K, 1/2M, M) – Sunday May 27 at Stampede Park

  • Registration -$40 to $105
  • Funds raised support – Various (select from list including HSF)
  • Expo (extra charge)

DIL Walk (South Asian CV risk awareness) – Saturday June 2 at Lester B. Pearson High School

World Partnership Walk – Sunday June 10 at Prince’s Island Park

Energizer Night Race (5K, 10K) – Saturday August 18 at North Glenmore Park

Remember – take lots of pictures for sharing.  Let’s set an example and walk the walk to better health, while supporting some great causes!

Libin alumnus back at UCalgary after a decade at NASA

In Researchers on March 23, 2012 at 9:35 pm

University of Calgary Distinguished Alumni Douglas R. Hamilton, a graduate of the MD/PhD program under the supervision of the Libin Institute’s John V. Tyberg, has been recruited back to Calgary to join the Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta.

Dr. Hamilton spent the last decade with NASA as a flight surgeon and was recently on CBC Radio’s Quirks and Quarks speaking on the topic “Astronaut Eyes“.  Listen to the segment (click the play button):

Interesting tid-bit:  Dr. Hamilton’s PhD thesis starts with the acknowledgment of numerous individuals who helped him along the way.  Of particular note was the support of Dr. Tyberg, who among other things, helped Hamilton with his “sppeling”.

Welcome back Hami!
