CIHR to fund Tyberg research

In Researchers on November 18, 2010 at 4:26 pm

The Honourable Leona Algukkaq, Federal Minister of Health announced funding for new research on physical activity and childhood obesity on November 15, 2010.  The Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta‘s Dr. John Tyberg, Professor in the Departments of Cardiac Sciences as well as Physiology & Pharmacology, leads one of only nine projects that made the cut.

The multi-year funding will allow Dr. John Tyberg to study the importance of arterial reservoir in the distribution of blood to vital organs in the body and how exercise affects the volume of this reservoir.  Demonstrating how this reservoir works might persuade people to exercise more and lead to the development of new drugs.

Dr. Paul Fedak – Calgary’s top 40 under 40

In Awards, Researchers on November 4, 2010 at 10:57 pm

The Libin Institute’s Dr. Paul Fedak, Cardiac Surgeon and Scientist, has been recognized by Avenue Magazine as one of Calgary’s top 40 under 40 for 2010.

Why he’s the top: He’s a heart surgeon and researcher pioneering cutting-edge techniques to treat heart conditions.

The key to his success: “You need to create the conditions for your own success. Find out what you want and what you need to get there — then create the conditions to make it happen.”

His motivation: “It’s getting a thumbs-up after a surgery when the patient knows they are going to be OK. It doesn’t get any better than that.”

Please visit Avenue Magazine to read the rest of article about Dr. Fedak’s selection into the top 40 list and to watch an interview with him about his work and what it means.

Libin at the CCC

In Conferences on November 4, 2010 at 10:22 pm

The Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta was once very well represented at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress (CCC), being held in Montreal for 2010 from October 23 to 27. Approximately 75 members, staff and trainees were in attendance. There was a sense of home evident, with the Institute booth in the exhibition hall a popular meeting place for all, and the 4th annual Libin reception at the CCC one of the premier networking engagements anywhere. Following are a selection of photos from the congress.
